Harlington Community School Harlington, London

Harlington Community School in Hillingdon is a co-educational comprehensive day school for students aged 11 to 18. The job followed on from a successful one-day workshop at the RIBA in which Gort Scott worked with students and staff from the school.

2008–2010
Client: Harlington Community School
Project Status: Completed
Budget: £36,000

At the workshop, we identified that Harlington had a severely space-constrained campus, causing many problems, the main being a lack of space for socialising and peer interaction. As a result of the prize-winning workshop scheme, the school’s governing body commissioned Gort Scott to design and deliver a masterplan for the outdoor spaces of the school and to deliver a new outdoor play area.

With tight resources, we designed a series of colourful, durable and inventive exterior furniture pieces. The built scheme includes a number of large benches, made with recycled plastic planks on a galvanised steel frame, and three translucent canopy shelters. Graphics were painted directly onto the tarmac playground surface. Combined, these proposals have allowed the students of the school to reclaim their playground.
