The Magistrates Walthamstow, London

The Magistrates Walthamstow, London

Re-purposing of the former Magistrate’s Court into temporary council offices for the London Borough of Waltham Forest.

2017–2018
Client: London Borough of Waltham Forest
Project Status: Completed

This project transformed the 1972 brutalist Magistrate’s Court into offices for the Council, as early phase in the Borough’s ambitious Town Hall Campus regeneration project. Gort Scott worked with the Council to define a more aspirational brief, demonstrating that characterful, intelligent design represented better value and would improve functionality. The scheme includes a café/reception, informal shared workspace and more traditional office areas. The design focused on opening up the cellular plan, and stripping away suspended ceilings and concealed services to create large, open-plan flexible areas. Colour and pattern are used carefully throughout, creating inviting spaces whilst retaining the building's robust character. A bespoke floor pattern was designed for the café and shared working area, and applied by members of the Gort Scott team.

The Magistrates sits within an extraordinary landscaped site of Listed Buildings. Gort Scott have been appointed as part of the design team for the later phases of the Town Hall regeneration project.
