Gort Scott’s work with a listed ensemble of public buildings in Walthamstow makes the campus more open, inclusive and accessible, while providing consolidated and collaborative workspace for council staff from across the borough and helping to increase the potential for different uses and events within a new neighbourhood.
The interior of the existing Grade II listed Town Hall will be strategically opened-up to create open-plan dual-aspect spaces that could serve both as council offices and co-working areas. The sensitive refurbishment will also enhance existing timber-lined committee rooms and the semi-octagonal Council Chamber on the building’s first floor for democratic and ceremonial functions.
A new civic building will replace Gort Scott’s temporarily converted Magistrates project, to deliver more efficient and flexible purpose-built council workspace, completing the symmetry of the original 1940s campus masterplan with main entrance frontage onto the central square.
